		<description>
                The wait is over! Bold &amp; Brave, a vision which began back in 2019, is finally becoming a reality and opening its doors to the public for the first time on Saturday 9th October.

Bold &amp; Brave, situated in Taunton’s Independent Quarter, is an exciting new retail experience, bringing together young people and the community.

Working in partnership with Young Somerset, Bold &amp; Brave is no ordinary shop; it’s a place where you can purchase unique handmade goods and locally sourced products, all made by young people or to support young people.

But it’s also so much more; it’s a community hub, a social enterprise space and a place that provides young people with the opportunity to have visible roles within Bold &amp; Brave, whilst gaining work experience and life skills training.

Nik Harwood, CEO of Young Somerset says “By working closely with local colleges, SEND &amp; secondary schools and community partners we’re empowering young people of Somerset to design, ethically produce, showcase and sell their own quality products.”

We’re also on the lookout for talented young producers, designers, artists and entrepreneurs who’d like to showcase and sell their work in Bold &amp; Brave. This unique opportunity will allow you to give your products an audience, develop skills and confidence, network with other young entrepreneurs and be mentored by Young Somerset staff. Find out more: https://www.youngsomerset.org.uk/are-you-bold-brave

Young people are at the very heart of Bold &amp; Brave, supporting and empowering them to put their stamp on their products and their community.

Some come along to 14 Riverside Place and find out more about what Bold &amp; Brave is all about, whilst discovering quality handmade local products!

If you’d like to find out more or get involved, please pop into Bold &amp; Brave, or get in touch with our Retail Manager, Carol Farmer: carolfarmer@youngsomerset.org.uk / 07950 209582

                If you&#039;re looking for somewhere local to do your Christmas shopping, you might want to visit the pop-up shop with a difference in Somerset.
&#039;Sense-ational&#039; has opened in Angel Place, Bridgwater, and is run by young people with special educational needs and disabilities.
The aim of the venture is to provide these Somerset students with work experience.
Sen.se (Special Educational Needs Somerset Expertise) says it can be &quot;very difficult to access this kind of opportunity&quot; if you are a young person with these needs.
This unique shop hopes to fill that gap. Take a look.

		<description>
                As part of our work on developing governance and developing future system leaders, the TSC are designating Local Leaders of Governance for experienced governors who are able to share their skills and knowledge with other governors in need of support. At the moment, there have only been 2 applications from sub region A (and we&#039;re lagging far behind sub region D). I was hoping you could help to promote this to your schools and their governing boards as it is a great opportunity for governors with specialisms to support the development of other governors as we know what a crucial role they play in school improvement. There may well be people out there interested who only need a little nudge to apply.

Attached is a flyer, application form and reference form. The deadline for applications has been extended until 8th March - anyone who misses this deadline will be included in future rounds.

                Education &amp; Schools
How does the Trust support school garden projects?
The Trust supports schools through grant aid for specified, viable and financially thought through projects. Each application is considered by the Education Committee before a site visit is made to the school.  Schools may also be supported by parents through either PTA or garden club input. The Committee then allocates funding up to £350 towards the project. We also follow up the awards by receiving photographs of the completed project, re-visiting the school to see progress or even being invited to a grand opening of the scheme.

		<description>
                Ofsted launches a consultation on proposals for changes to the education inspection framework .

Consultation proposals on how Ofsted inspects schools, early years settings and further education and skills providers, to take effect from September 2019

Summary:
revised framework to focus inspection on what children learn through the curriculum, rather than over-reliance on performance data
proposals will call time on the culture of ‘teaching to the test’ and off-rolling
new separate behaviour judgement to give parents reassurance that behaviour is good
most evidence-based, research-informed and tested framework in Ofsted’s 26-year history.

The consultation is open until 5 April 2019. Views are sought on the overall changes to the framework as well as on how they will work in practice for the individual education remits. All responses received will be considered carefully, and will help Ofsted to refine and improve the proposed approach before the final framework and inspection handbooks are published in summer 2019.

                Somerset Winter Newsletter:

LIFEbeat continues to build the Somerset Community

This year LIFEbeat has begun to build community in Somerset. PSHE leads, school nurses and mental health staff have come together and we have trained teachers from 63 schools. In addition, it has been a pleasure to collaborate with the SCC team to launch the Somerset Wellbeing Framework with a wonderful event at Frogmary Farm in July this year and a workshop this Autumn on Schools as Communities of Belonging.

What an inspiration it has been to witness the passion and commitment of so many teachers who believe in their pupils and the unique potential of every individual. Marion Jarrett, Hugh Sexey Middle School, shares her work with Year 6 on Mental Health and wellbeing following the PSHE training.

In 2019 we will be offering another 3 day PSHE training course, so please do recommend to colleagues within your settings. We will also be delivering trainings to enhance the three evidence-based pillars of Belonging, Relationships and Healthy Lifestyles. We will also extend our work into West Somerset to enhance the mental health and wellbeing of young people in the area with trainings and a youth-led intervention on the theme of Body Image.

	Somerset training news
LIFEbeat is offering PSHE training courses in 2019:
•	LIFEbeat PSHE Training for Somerset Schools - 6 March, 22 May and 26 June
•	LIFEbeat PSHE Training for West Somerset Schools - 5 March, 21 May and 25 June
•	Creative Practices for Building Community - 16-17 January - Fully booked

LIFEbeat is also offering Wellbeing Framework trainings:
•	LIFEbeat Creative Practice: Somerset Wellbeing Framework - Relationships - 6 February
•	LIFEbeat Creative Practice: Somerset Wellbeing Framework - Healthy Lifestyles - 12 June

A three-year plan
As we approach 2019 and reflect on 10 years of successfully delivering transformational camps, trainings and ongoing support, our LIFEbeat community is stronger and bigger than ever. Looking ahead, our goal over the next three years is to serve more young people by establishing three regional LIFEbeat communities, delivering camps and programmes for local young people.

                In November 2018, pupils from two Somerset special schools spent three days with professional musicians from Live Music Now, creating music together. Members of The Spindle Ensemble, a Bristol-based group of musicians who have been receiving rave reviews for their first album, “Bea”, worked with pupils from Fairmead and Avalon schools as part of Live Music Now’s SEND Inspire programme, which trains musicians to use their skills to perform for and with young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

As a result, enterprise club is now issuing prints in a range of sizes: from Limited Edition canvasses to post card size prints, which can be purchased framed or unframed. The product range is extending to include mugs, cards and soon tote bags as well, featuring the much sought after prints.

On a blistering hot day in July, they set off to Dorset to complete three days walking and two nights camping. Their resilience, team work and high morale made sure that although their were challenges (and hills) to climb, it was a fantastic and amazing experience.

                A work experience review within the Selworthy School sixth form curriculum was held and through in-depth discussions with the staff and learners, interests and abilities were established. From these discussions, it became evident that we needed to establish more community links to broaden work experience opportunities. One of our learners was predominantly motivated by vehicles and their maintenance. Therefore, one of these links was established with the Toyota Garage in Taunton.

		<description>
                The support staff pay award will be a significant cost pressure for Somerset Special Schools in comparison to no increase in funding for 2018/19. This is in marked contrast to the situation for mainstream schools, where the impact is less and the funding increase is more. Given that this is a two year pay award, it may be timely to undertake some benchmarking within sen.se and beyond in relation to support staff grades and roles, and the cost effectiveness of different staffing models for different types of need. This would be advisable before engaging with the LA over the inequity of the cash freeze on funding for special school.

		<description>
                SSV (Special Schools’ Voice) brings together existing associations/groupings of Special schools, and seeks to articulate the views of schools, of their staff and of the children who populate them. It intends to inform and support Government organisations by giving them a special school perspective. Historically those working and leading Special schools have reported their frustration at being an ‘afterthought’ in terms of educational policy. In essence SSV strives to connect schools with policy makers.
