Grand Opening of 'Sense-ational' Monday 19th November 2018.

The Grand Opening of ‘Sense-ational’ will be taking place on Monday 19th November at 12.30pm, with the official cutting of the ribbon at 12.30pm by the Mayor of Taunton. The shop is at 56 High Street, Taunton (next to Tesco Express and opposite Hatchers). This is an innovative collaboration between Somerset County Council, Taunton Deane Council, Young Somerset, Somerset SENse, all our Somerset Special Schools and Humberts Estate Agents.

A lunchtime art enterprise club, initiated by Laura McCathie, Key Stage 4 Leader, has had unexpected results! The paintings produced were so outstanding that staff began commissioning paintings from them. It soon became clear that the students could not keep up with demand! As a result, enterprise club is now issuing prints in a range of sizes: from Limited Edition canvasses to post card size prints, which can be purchased framed or unframed. The product range is extending to include mugs, cards and soon tote bags as well, featuring the much sought after prints.

Critchill Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award

Five Year 12 and 13 students took up the challenge of a three day expedition in Dorset to achieve the final part of their Duke of Edinburgh Silver awards. On a blistering hot day in July, they set off to Dorset to complete three days walking and two nights camping. Their resilience, team work and high morale made sure that although their were challenges (and hills) to climb, it was a fantastic and amazing experience.

National Association for Special Educational Needs Launches FREE Online Training

Focus on SEND training is a free course aiming to help teachers and educational practitioners working across the 0-25 years age range to develop high quality practice in order to better meet the needs of their learners with SEND. It is based on the evidence of what constitutes good continuing professional development (CPD) and so takes a practice-led, enquiry-based and collaborative approach.

A work experience review within the Selworthy School sixth form curriculum was held and through in-depth discussions with the staff and learners, interests and abilities were established. From these discussions, it became evident that we needed to establish more community links to broaden work experience opportunities. One of our learners was predominantly motivated by vehicles and their maintenance. Therefore, one of these links was established with the Toyota Garage in Taunton.

The support staff pay award will be a significant cost pressure for Somerset Special Schools in comparison to no increase in funding for 2018/19. This is in marked contrast to the situation for mainstream schools, where the impact is less and the funding increase is more. Given that this is a two year pay award, it may be timely to undertake some benchmarking within sen.se and beyond in relation to support staff grades and roles, and the cost effectiveness of different staffing models for different types of need. This would be advisable before engaging with the LA over the inequity of the cash freeze on funding for special school.

First of its kind - Private Counselling service for people with Learning Difficulties to be launched in Taunton

According to the ‘Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities’, between 25-40% of people with LD also suffer from mental health problems. With this in mind local Community Interest Company, Community Life Design CIC have launched a counselling service specifically for people with learning disabilities in Somerset for over 18s.
